Length: Worker 12-18 mm.
Colour: Worker is black and white. The Bald-faced hornet builds a large grey-blue soccer ball-sized paper nest with a single entrance off-centre at the tip. The combs are horizonal with a multi-layered cover surrounding and protecting them. Usually, a nest is suspended among the branches of a tree, but it may be built underground. In this case, it is often suspended from a tree root or a stone. These wasps can become aggressive if the nest is disturbed but will tolerate human approach. Bald-faced hornets are not true hornets, but a paper wasp. As the result of their size, coloration and habits, they are commonly, but erroneously, classified as such.
