Bumble bees are social insects that can be quite large in some species. They produce a distinct buzzing noise when in flight. Like Honeybees, they have modified hairs on their hind legs to carry pollen to the nest, which is usually in debris or just below ground level in a lawn. Many a lawnmower has disturbed this type of nest. Some nests may be found above ground as well. In some areas, these bees are more important than honeybees for pollinating crops.
